Hotel Reservations in Faro
Step outside your luxury hotel in Faro into the capital of the Algarve region of Portugal. Characteristically Portuguese, the laid back coastal town is a welcoming, warm place.
Still surrounded by medieval walls, the Cidade Velha (old city) embraces the history of Faro with narrow cobblestone streets, Portuguese and Moorish architecture. Enter the old town through the Arco da Vila, the neoclassical town gate, into the town square. On one side you will see the 13th century Gothic Cathedral (Sé). Next to the cathedral is the 16th century Convento de Nossa Senhora da Assunção which now houses the Museum of Archaeology. Just up from the Sé is an 18th century Episcopal Palace with its roof finished in hand painted tile. For a more macabre site, visit the Capela d'Ossos behind the Church of Our Lady of Carmel. The chapel is lined with the bones and skulls of more than 1,200 monks.
For a relaxing experience, head out of town to the beaches. Praia de Faro on the Ilha de Farois the only beach you can walk to from the mainland. More beaches, accessible via a short ferry ride include Ilha de Tavira, Ilha de Armona, Ilha da Culatra, Ilha da Barreta and Burgau. The warm, crystal clear waters and fine sand make the trip across from the mainland worth it.
